Growing Natives Garden Tour 2018

Gathering Place Patio Garden (12 photos)

Garden #5, Redwood City

Showcase Features: This 3 year old garden was professionally designed and installed after the homeowners decided to replace their lawn with a water conserving native garden. The garden is wheelchair accessible and features a paved seating area where the owners and neighbors can sit to enjoy nature and conversation. Hummingbirds, doves, butterflies and lizards are among the wildlife attracted to the range of plants that provide habitat and color through much of the year. There is a large specimen Ceanothus to the left of the front door and ground cover ceanothus elsewhere in the garden. David's Choice Artemesia's gray leaves provide color contrast with the low growing manzanitas. Other plants include California Bush Sunflower, various grasses both low growing and tall, penstemons and golden aster. Irrigation is provided by drip lines with plants grouped according to similar water needs. Timers also insure that each plant receives the optimal amount of water to flourish. Mulch helps conserve water as well as reduces weed growth.
