Master Gardeners South County Teaching and Demo Garden (7 photos)

Garden #83, Gilroy

While this garden is open all year round, visiting it during the tour day provides an opportunity to ask the docents about any particularly interesting plants or features.

Address: 9400 No Name Uno, Gilroy (click the address to show it on a map).

Directions: From Hwy 101, take exit 357 towards Gilroy Outlets. Turn left onto San Ysidro Ave, then continue for about 0.7 mile past the mall, and turn left onto Las Animas Ave, then immediately right; Los Animas will become No Name Uno. Continue for about 0.3 mile to the St. Louise Hospital. Turn right into the Hospital drive and then immediately left. Follow the road around the complex to the parking lot between the Hospital building and South Valley Medical Pavilion. The garden is near the northeast corner of the hospital and across the street from the Pavilion.

Showcase Features: This native garden lies between the St. Louise Hospital and the Master Gardeners' compact orchard in Gilroy. It features a 15 foot tall California Lilac (Ceanothus) pruned into a multi-trunk tree. It also has redwood trees, a small madrone, manzanita bushes, white sage, monkey flowers and blue eyed-grass just to name a few plants. This garden was planted in 2010. The site was originally a weed patch. Once weeds were removed native plants were added without amending the soil. By now, the plants are mature and provide insight into what your yard can look like in a few years.

Other Garden Attractions: Two years ago we planted a Monarch Butterfly garden with native milkweed (Asclepias facicularis) and last year added a few monkey flowers as a nectar source.
