Going Native Garden Tour 2018

Nurture Nature (10 photos from 2017)

Garden #68, San Jose

Showcase Features: This two-year-old garden demonstrates how quickly a well-designed and installed native plant garden can fill in. The erstwhile lawn and thirsty non-native plantscape is transformed into a mulched bed bisected by a meandering dry creek. Plants include deergrass, buckwheat, coyote mint, yarrow, and zauschneria. Blue oak, western redbud, and desert willow provide nesting habitat when mature. A drip irrigation replaces the sprinkler system. Rainwater from the front gutter flows through dry creek bed to the plants instead of the driveway and out to road. The side garden is irrigated with popup drain from front gutter.

Other Garden Attractions: In the backyard, orange trees overlook a native landscape of woolly blue curls, hummingbird sage, zauschneria, and yarrow. The adjacent patio provides a place for relaxation, recreation, and observation.

Gardening for Wildlife: Wildlife observed include dragonfly, ladybug, butterfly, lizard, hummingbird, oriole, woodpecker, towhee, chickadee, black phoebe, squirrel, and opossum.
