Going Native Garden Tour 2019

Four Seasons of Color (15 photos)

Garden #18, Campbell

Showcase Features: Total conversion of the front and back yard started four years ago with the removal of the front and rear lawns. The front yard was prepared for installation of native plants, the creation of berms and adding a drip system. A dry stream bed starts near a downspout and meanders toward the front of the yard. Front yard plants include Native Grasses, Manzanitas, Ceanothus, Foothill Sage, Hummingbird Fuchsia, Rosy Buckwheat, Salvia, Toyon, Heuchera and more. In the last year, ten mature oleander plants on the front property line were removed and a redwood fence installed, and several more Manzanita and Ceanothus were added. The backyard was initially planted with Toyon, Rosy Buckwheat, Native Grasses, Sticky Monkeyflower and more, which have grown considerably! In the last year, the small remaining back lawn was replaced with Ceonothus, Lippia Ripens (aka Phyla nodiflora), as well as Sage, Bee Plants, Verbena and Salvia. Many non-natives in the back yard were replaced by Manzanitas, Ceanothus varieties, Coffeeberry, and deciduous and evergreen Currants.

Other Garden Attractions: In the front, berms and shallow valleys provide a perfect growing environment for a variety of native plants and creates a natural setting. The backyard had some interesting challenges with varying degrees of shade and sun, and incorporating established non-native plants with sentimental value into the landscape.

Gardening for Wildlife: An increase of birds, butterflies, and bees has occurred. There are nocturnal animals too, which are occasionally observed. Their 'results' are also seen by way of random digging.
