Showcase Features: Visitors who walk by the one-year-old front yard will find lovely blooming natives all year round. Bees, butterflies, birds, and lizards are attracted to this oasis. Light-colored mulch marks a wandering path and provides access for garden maintenance. A delightful large backyard retreat features many natives and some edibles. Right next to the central seating area is a bubbling fountain, and behind that are the raised beds with seasonal vegetables. The rest of the garden shows of California native perennials and shrubs, offering color year round. Stepping stones from repurposed concrete make it easy to reach all parts of the garden without a lot of hardscape.

Other Garden Attractions: As the visitor enters the garden, a Roger's Red (half)-native grape climbs up an arbor. In the background, a small lawn of native bunch grasses is set off by a sculptural deer grass. Both low-growing and tall manzanita cultivars are sure to delight with their small bell-shaped flowers in early spring. After that, a large blooming verbena and several coyote mints attract butterflies, blooming into summer, when the different species of buckwheat take over. Finally, in fall and winter, California fuchsia attracts hummingbirds and pollinators with its large trumpet-shaped orange flowers.

Gardening for Wildlife: Hummingbirds, finches, and doves visit this garden, and the smart crows have figured out that the fountain is a great source for water year round.
