Growing Natives Garden Tour 2016
A Door That Opens Wide (6 photos)
Garden #14, Palo Alto
Showcase Features: This professionally designed garden is a work of art with its colors, sculptures, bench - and of course plantings. The garden showcases not only beautiful California native plants, but also extensive reuse of materials found on site. An existing Mexican sage survived the garden remodel and is still blooming strongly, but in spring, penstemon start to bloom and the manzanita gets bigger every year. Different buckwheats, monardella, and golden aster in the sun and coral bells and berberis in the shade take their place among the edibles.
Other Garden Attractions: In the front, the owner took out the cobblestone driveway, and the designer used the stones for rock walls and retaining walls. The dwarf coyote brush, still small in this young garden, will soon form a welcome cover of green. In the back, attractive walkways were made from other parts of the driveway. An open bike shed shelters bikes. The washing machine water drains to a large maple tree that has been in this garden for a long time. Raised beds for vegetables complement the many California natives.
Gardening for Wildlife: The different blooming perennials are sure to attract pollinators, while the large redwood offers shelter to birds and other critters.
☺ Garden Talk: Garden Talk by the Designer: 11:00 am & 1:00 pm "Recycling Materials and Water in the Garden" Hear how a variety of materials: cobbles, concrete, wood, and water were recycled in the garden to create brand new design.
