Showcase Features: Installed in January 2016, this native garden was designed to be low water use, wildlife-friendly and low maintenance. Existing trees were incorporated into the plan because of their house-cooling shade. A dry-stacked fieldstone wall manages the slope and adds sculptural interest. Native sages planted just above the wall are flourishing with the excellent drainage.

Other Garden Attractions: The garden will soon be covered with a tapestry of low-growing shrubs, grasses and perennials, including manzanitas, foothill penstemon, and coyote brush. For long-term low maintenance, they are planted far enough apart for their eventual size. After a year, the garden is already a pleasing combination of textures and colors, accented by flowers. Viewing this garden shows that only a little patience is needed when resisting overplanting.
