Growing Natives Garden Tour 2016
LaBouff Garden (15 photos)
Garden #56, San Jose
Showcase Features: Removing a front lawn in 2014 inspired a creative native garden featuring a charming courtyard. A wide decomposed granite path winds past deer grass, Pacific reed grass, and " Trichostema 'Midnight Magic' mixed with shrub accents of salvia, ceanothus and desert willow. Raised beds contain herbs. The focal point is the courtyard surfaced in decomposed granite and screened with wire fence and salvaged wood, including reused doors. Ribes and rhus trilobata are espaliered on the courtyard fence. A shade canopy and seating make the outdoor room the perfect spot from which to enjoy watching hummingbirds visiting coyote mint and California fuchsia.
Other Garden Attractions: The shadier path to the backyard is planted with heuchera and coffee berry. The backyard incorporates older plants with newly planted natives. The center is a red fescue meadow surrounded with "Ray Hartman" and "Julia Phelps" ceanothus, juncus, deergrass and a "Roger's Red" native grape. Some older hardscape is extended with wood sections used as pavers in a seating area. A rain barrel collects water for garden use.
