Growing Natives Garden Tour 2011

Rumford Drive Garden (8 photos)

Garden #31, Cupertino

Showcase Features: This ecologically sensible garden is a trendsetter in the neighborhood. A Dr. Hurd manzanita is the center of the front garden, surrounded by colorful perennials. Most of the concrete parking strip was converted into a planting bed and is now a home to a western hawthorn, western redbud, coffeeberry and coyote brush.. A casual hedge of Winnifred Gilman sage accents the front entrance, while Canyon Prince wild rye punctuates the garage door.

Other Garden Attractions: A native mow-free meadow and an in-ground fountain surrounded by gravel paths anchor the back garden. A group of redwood community plantings (vine maple, western hazelnut, thimbleberry, evergreen huckleberry, sword fern, redwood sorrel, etc.) enjoy the shade of the house. Giant western chain fern edges the raised fig tree bed. Along the back fence, chaparral currant, Ray Hartman ceanothus, toyon, bush anemone, and a young bigleaf maple edged with perennials provide seasonal color and more critter habitat.

Gardening for Wildlife: A variety of native plants and a fountain provide food, shelter, and water for the many visiting birds and insects.
