Growing Natives Garden Tour 2021
Sampson's Play Yard (19 photos from 2020)
Garden #18, San Jose
Showcase Features: A magnificent, mature Toyon specimen beacons visitors to the front yard of this professionally designed, drought resistant residential landscape. In the backyard, a dry creek channels the rain away from the downspouts. Fruit trees mingle with native shrubs along the fences. A step stone path meanders among native shrubs and grasses toward the main patio, which is connected to a smaller, round flagstone patio edged with a seat wall. These resting places provide a vantage point to a sedge meadow and to a tall and handsome green fountain.
Other Garden Attractions: The front yard has a paver driveway and main path, and a nice selection of native sages, buckwheats, chaparral currant, lilac verbena, and a bush sunflower complimenting the few retained mature exotic species. A collection of succulents border the front patio. In the backyard, bush anemone, Ceanothus, deer grass, and shade-loving island alum root and Oregon grape are celebrated among the fruit trees. This is a dog-friendly garden, and was designed with Sampson, the family dog, in mind.
Gardening for Wildlife: The variety of plant selections and the water features make this a wildlife friendly garden.
