Growing Natives Garden Tour 2017
UU Fellowship Garden (16 photos)
Garden #4, Redwood City
While this garden is open all year round, visiting it during the tour day provides an opportunity to ask the docents about any particularly interesting plants or features.
Address: 2124 Brewster Ave., Redwood City (click the address to show it on a map).
Directions: From Hwy. 101, take exit 409 for Whipple Avenue. Go on Whipple southwest for about 1 mile, and turn left onto Hudson St. Continue on Hudson, and take second left, onto Brewster Ave. The garden will be seen on the right, after about 0.2 mile (corner of Brewster and Lowell).
Showcase Features: The garden, planted with a grant from the Lawn be Gone program, shows a lawn can become an inviting entrance garden with colorful flowers and visual interest. The garden is still quite young, but the coral bells and ornamental strawberry ground cover with shiny foliage are sure to fill in soon. Low-growing sages will also act as ground cover, with the added benefit of flowers in the spring and fragrant leaves year round. A crew of volunteers maintains the garden and waters everything by hand. Watering frequency will be reduced over the years.
Other Garden Attractions: Perennials offer splashes of color throughout the seasons and include monkey flower for the spring (and beyond), rosy buckwheat for summer, and California fuchsia for fall and into winter.
Gardening for Wildlife: Native milkweed is available for butterflies, and flowering plants attract pollinators and hummingbirds.
