Growing Natives Garden Tour 2012
Zelda's Window Garden (9 photos)
Garden #36, Campbell
Showcase Features: Once a large Bermuda grass lawn, this attractive colorful garden is now filled with blooming perennials and a nod to the valley's agricultural past with fruit trees. In the center of the garden are three large Rosa californica that provide colorful rose hips in winter. Year-round color is provided by Cedros Island verbena, coyote mint, salvias, penstemon, California fuchsia, monkeyflower, San Bruno Mountain golden aster, lupine, ceanothus and manzanita. A nicely shaped lavatera, California pipevine and a baby madrone play supporting roles.
Other Garden Attractions: Peeking over the backyard fence is a large holly-leaf cherry, attracting many birds, which are encouraged by the owners' additions of bird bath, nest boxes, bird feeders and a nesting platform. There is also a rainwater barrel to capture rooftop water.
Gardening for Wildlife: Western Fence Lizards, butterflies, various native bees, Chickadees, Goldfinches, Mockingbirds, Oak Titmice, and Hummingbirds are common visitors. Nest boxes in trees have been used by Chestnut-Backed Chickadees & Bewick's Wren. Nest platform used by Mourning Doves.
