Growing Natives Garden Tour 2014

Native Garden Wheel at Emma Prusch Farm Park (5 photos)

Garden #53, San Jose

While this garden is open all year round, visiting it during the tour day provides an opportunity to ask the docents about any particularly interesting plants or features.

Address: 647 S. King Rd, San Jose (click the address to show it on a map).

Directions: From Hwy 101, take the Story Road exit and follow signs for Story Road East. Continue on Story Rd for about 1/2 mile and turn left onto S King Rd. At Lido Way, turn left into Emma Prusch Park, and continue to the main parking lot; the Native Garden Wheel is on the left, near the park office.

Showcase Features: Designed, installed and maintained by the UCCE Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County, this native garden features a California buckeye surrounded by three pie-shaped beds that share the same palette. None of the plants in the beds will grow taller than three feet high, avoiding visual obstruction and making it easier for park visitors to find their way to their destination.

Other Garden Attractions: The Prusch Native Garden Wheel is the latest transformation of the prominent garden in front of the farmhouse at the large and heavily visited Emma Prusch Farm Park in San Jose. Plants growing in the garden include coyote mint, California fuchsia, sticky monkey flower, sage, yarrow, wild flowers and other sun loving natives. They are labeled with the common and botanical names, as well as a plant description and the wildlife attracted to it. The garden is fenced to keep the chickens, as well as peacocks, geese, and ducks out of the garden. The Prusch Farm Park also features a rare fruit orchard, Veggielution, and 4H livestock.

Gardening for Wildlife: Plants were chosen specifically to attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife
