Growing Natives Garden Tour 2015

Garden #29, Sunnyvale

Showcase Features: Creating a feeling of abundance in a small native garden is not easy, but this beautiful front garden shows it can be done. Decomposed granite paths edged with lights and a dry creek bed for drainage form the bones of the garden, and many different species of plants, both shrubs and perennials, fill everything out. Native bunch grasses (Calamagrostis foliosa) and native iris add welcome spots of green, contrasting with the golden paths and the grey pebbles.

Other Garden Attractions: Both tall and low-growing ceanothus are sure to be pollinator magnets in spring, while California native buckwheats promise visits from butterflies in summer. When visitors passes a fragrant Cleveland sage on their way to the front door they appreciate that the beauty of California native plants can affect all senses.

Gardening for Wildlife: This garden attracts pollinators year round and includes hummingbird-friendly plants such as sages.
