Growing Natives Garden Tour 2016

Native Textures (12 photos)

Garden #63, San Jose

Showcase Features: The former lawn in the small front yard is now a graphic tapestry of plants. Swathes of low-growing San Bruno aster, baccharis, silver-leaved salvia and "Emerald Carpet" manzanita create a dramatically patterned ground cover, accented by a mound with a shrub Manzanita.

Other Garden Attractions: This yard was totally transformed in 2014. The back yard is a green and peaceful retreat combining native plants and food production. Existing fruit trees, along with coffeeberry and "Ray Hartman" ceanothus provide a sense of enclosure. Carpenteria and Ribes mingle with lower-growing juncus, yarrow, Manzanita "Carmel Sur" and hummingbird sage. A flagstone path winds past a grape vine to a patio flanked by raised beds for vegetables.
