Showcase Features: The owners started the project of transforming the existing garden to a primarily California native plant grarden with a view of sustainability and aesthetics in mind. What began as an initiative to remove the lawn and swap the non native existing plants with water wise and native plants has evolved into a garden for providing a habitat to sustain local insect and bird populations that are crucial for a thriving ecosystem.

The garden showcases a collection of some uncommon CA plants like Nevins Barberry and Dune Tansy, as well a some very showy staples like Flannel Bush, Matilda Poppy, Mallows, and plants from the 4' keystone' plant species- Buckwheats, manzanitas, Sages and Ceonothus. Low growing asters, yarrows, coyote mints and penstemons provide a colorful palette, while climbers like Dutchman's pipe and Clematis cover the artistic screens to provide privacy in the front yard. Attractive mounds in the front garden to provide drainage to some special plants such as Wooly Blue Curls.

Other Garden Attractions: Sculptural elements like a birdbath and a rockfall serve the dual purpose of providing water and a lizard habitat. A meadow like feel is created in the front yard with Clarkias, Soap plant, CA fuchsia, CA poppies and blue flax filling in between the larger plants.
In the back, tall toyons surround a sitting area, while many different low- and mid-side natives create an inviting environment for guests that sit under the shade sail, above the circular patio. The water-pervious patio is made with an artistically laid out pattern of Arizona flagstone, dressed with pebbles between the steps and creeping lippia. A hummocky, native grass meadow in front of the back yard's cottage is a nice design accent. What a refreshing and peaceful place to return to after a hard day at work!

Gardening for Wildlife: The many native plants attract pollinators, including moths, and the no-pesticide approach makes the garden a happy home to lizards and many birds.

Plants Available: Donors to CNPS will receive a CA native plant propagated from the owners' garden (while supplies last).
