Growing Natives Garden Tour 2025
Local Native, Straight Species Garden (11 photos)
Garden #59, San Mateo
This garden can be visited only on Sun, Apr 13, 2025.
Showcase Features: This 100% local native garden includes only native plant species that existed in that location pre-settlement. It includes an abundance of wildlife-friendly perennials such as Artemisia, California Fuchsia, Yarrow, and native Strawberry groundcover. Sculptural grasses line an attractive flagstone walkway, and some shade-tolerant natives close to the house, such as Coffeeberry and Currant, are bird magnets.
Other Garden Attractions: Several large rocks add structure and visual appeal to this garden.
Gardening for Wildlife: The plant choices include many wildlife magnets such as California Fuchsia for the hummingbirds, Yarrow for the butterflies, and pink-flowering currant and Coffeeberry for shelter and food for the birds. A bird house and several simple birdbaths help birds through the dry summer months.
