Growing Natives Garden Tour 2024

Lincoln High School Native Garden (22 photos)

Garden #54, San Jose

This garden can be visited only on Sun, Apr 14, 2024.

Showcase Features: Started in April of 2023, the Lincoln Native Garden is an entirely student-led project which has transformed an unused patch of land behind the school into a beautiful green space for students and local wildlife to enjoy. The garden is full of educational opportunities, including collaborations with classes such as Environmental science, Biology, and Ethnic studies -- essentially an outdoor classroom, enriching learning experiences and providing a quiet space for students to socialize and relax. The garden currently includes approximately 30 California native plant species. A young valley oak at the center of the garden forms the focal point, surrounded by drought-tolerant chaparral plants.

Other Garden Attractions: The valley oak is surrounded by a ring of tree stumps, providing a natural seating area and outdoor classroom space. A mature coast live oak growing on the property line anchors the space.

Gardening for Wildlife: Plants with high habitat value, including numerous Ceanothus species, oaks, manzanitas, sages, sagebrushes, and coyote brush were selected to form the foundation of the planting. In just the first year, the black sage has become a haven for ladybugs. California fuchsias and hummingbird sages attract hummingbirds while the long-flowering California brittlebushes, California asters, and sages provide a stable nectar source for bees. Birds, including northern mockingbirds, towhees, and dark-eyed juncos, find shelter in the shrubs and feast on dried seedheads.
