Growing Natives Garden Tour 2013
Honeybee Garden (4 photos)
Garden #46, San Jose
Showcase Features: When this professional beekeeper's lawn was converted to a native garden, multiple zones were carved out of a typical San Jose small front yard. On the sunny side of the yard, native grapes are trained on a fence. A small meadow fronts a beautiful wood arbor that can hold a hammock. A table and chairs allow for relaxation while watching the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds that frequent the garden. In the center, mounds and berms are planted with salvia, manzanita, penstemons, deer grass, yerba buena and other natives. Urbanite and salvaged wood are used for garden paths and retaining walls. Some magnificent dudleyas showcase this underused native succulent.
Other Garden Attractions: An intriguing abstract sculpture is actually a composition of old irrigation pipes. It houses jars of honey for sale. The owner also has hives on display
Gardening for Wildlife: Logs are used as habitat for insects and amphibians, grass meadow provides habitat for small critters and birds, and manzanita provides food for wildlife.
